Washrooms at Gardens come with savings

'This is needed because these washrooms have not been updated since 1986'

Renovations can soon take place at the Hall of Fame washrooms at North Bay's Memorial Gardens.

This week, city council approved a contract with Venasse Building Group for $145,000, which was the lowest bid received. The money is available through funds set aside as part of ongoing rehab of the Gardens.

"This is needed because these washrooms have not been updated since 1986, are inefficient and requiring repairs, and most importantly they do not meet the current standards for AODA - Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act," says Councillor Mike Anthony.

"Even better is that - apart from the $145,000 renovation work - the cost of the already done design work was covered through a grant we received from the Event Hosting Fund, for holding the World Women's Curling Championships. I don't have the precise  number but I believe that means around $15,000 in architectural and engineering design work came at no cost to the local taxpayer," explains Anthony.

"Really, that successful curling event just keeps on being positive for the city. Now, by covering the design costs it saves the taxpayer much-needed money. The work can be a bit of a legacy to that great event, and most importantly will improve accessibility for all, which is always important."
