Want to be a movie extra? It's easy.

"I have had consistent extras who are now landing speaking roles because they have gotten that on-set experience and they want to try it.”

Hideaway Pictures is looking to hire extras on their new series in the Flowershop Mysteries : Snipped in the Bud and Dearly Depotted.

Micheline Blais, who does Northern and Extras Casting for the Series, will be hosting a meet and greet at Cecil’s Brewhouse and Kitchen this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to try and find a dedicated group of extras.

Those who cannot make it can send a recent jpeg photo with contact information to [email protected]

She says these extra positions will be paying jobs and there is no cost to come and sign up.

“So people can come out and have their picture taken and sign up to do some extra work on the shows,” she said.

“The biggest thing for us is finding people who are reliable and who will show up. Many people who are very new to the industry don’t take this seriously and they don’t see it as a paying job, so that’s part of the reason why we do a ‘go see’ is to just inform them that it is an actual job and you are going to get paid for it.”

Blais says she is looking for extras for three different film projects locally including The Flower Shop Mysteries.

Blais admits the days can be long for extras.

“They do need to commit for a full day because we don’t know how long it takes to get all the scenes that the extras will all be in.  So they could be on set anywhere from four to 12 hours.”

She says they are hiring from all genres, preferably ages 16 and older.

“We’ve had lawyers, judges, firefighters, school teachers.  Any profession that you can think of in Northern Ontario pretty much on set. For many people it’s just something they want to scratch off their bucket list.”

And you never know what extra work can lead into.

“I have had consistent extras who are now landing speaking roles because they have gotten that on-set experience and they want to try it,” said Blais.
