Ontario is reducing walleye catch limits to help rebuild the walleye population in Lake Nipissing.

The daily catch limit will be reduced from four walleye to two for sport fishing licence holders and from two to one for conservation fishing licence holders. The slot size will remain the same for both licences.

The reduced limits are in response to a drop in the walleye population over the past two years. They build on the recommendations of a special advisory committee that was formed to assist in walleye population recovery.

While it develops a long-term management plan for Lake Nipissing, which will include consultation with the advisory committee, the McGuinty government will continue a dialogue with local First Nations regarding the commercial fishery and consider ways to support community-based stocking.

Anglers are reminded to check the 2013 Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary when it is released on Jan. 1, 2013, to become familiar with all regulation changes before they go fishing.
