Voodoos go to overtime for exhibition win over Gold Miners

Voodoos net first victory at the Powassan Sportsplex since March 1, 2020

Alex Little last played a game for the Powassan Voodoos as an affiliate player in 2019-20.

Today, the former AAA Trappers defender was one of the veterans on the young Voodoos squad that edged the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 2-1 with Little tallying the overtime winner.

The exhibition contest was the first Voodoos hockey game at the Sportsplex since a 4-1 win over the Espanola Express back on March 1 of 2020.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 2019-20 NOJHL regular season champs were unable to play last year and took a Leave Of Absence in January of 2021.

However, it was the visitors that held the lead through the majority of the contest. Dakota Seaman scored at 13:35 of the opening frame beating a sprawling Alex Bugeja for the opening tally.

It stayed that way until the final four minutes of the third period when rookie defender Ben Danielsen's shot got through traffic and beat Gold Miners stellar netminder Nick Alvarez to even the score at 1-1.

Little then broke the deadlock in the extra session of 3 on 3 play as he chipped in the game winning goal from the top of the crease.

Owen Wray got the win in goal for the Voodoos in relief of starter Alex Bugeja. Wray was perfect stopping all his 12 shots he faced while Bugeja stopped 16 of 17 including a pair of breakaway stops in 34 minutes of action.

The Voodoos are back on the road Saturday afternoon when they travel to Kirkland Lake to face the Gold Miners.  Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. at the Joe Mavrinac Community Centre.
