Unlicenced driver uninjured after collision with a train at New Liskeard crossing

The vehicle was dragged a short distance before coming to a stop in a nearby ditch

Temiskaming OPP say a suspended driver is uninjured after colliding with a train at a crossing on Whitewood Avenue in New Liskeard New Year's Day.

The accident happened shortly before 3 p.m.

Investigation revealed that the car was travelling east next to Golding St. and a train was northbound. The two collided after the driver ignored the crossing signal.

After the car was hit, it spun around and came to rest in the snowbank on the other side of the road.

The driver was assessed by the Temiskaming Emergency Medical Service as a precaution and did not sustain any injuries.

Officers spoke with the driver and found that she was driving without a valid licence.

The woman, a 28-year-old resident of Elk Lake is charged with:

  • Driving while under suspension
  • Disobey railway crossing signal - fail to stop

The Temiskaming OPP is reminding motorists that trains can come at any time.

"When approaching the railway crossing, slow down, and stop if the lights are flashing,". says Inspector Joel Breault of the Temiskaming Detachment.

"Do not cross the tracks until the lights have stopped flashing and the train has passed. Don't make a split-second decision that could cost you your life or that of someone else."
