Two new COVID cases today, 13 active

There have been 22,637 vaccinations given and that is 19.2 per cent of the over 18 population covered by the Health Unit

The North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit reports two new cases of COVID today, both through close contact. There are now 13 active cases with nine in the Nipissing District and four in Parry Sound.

The case count has now reached 302 since the pandemic began.

There have been 22,637 vaccinations given and that is 19.2 per cent of the over 18 population covered by the Health Unit.

Meanwhile, the Health Unit says it is booking appointments for people born in 1961 or before for upcoming COVID-19 vaccine clinics.

Less than a week after a third provincial shutdown was imposed, further restrictions and a stay-at-home order have been issued. The stay-at-home order is effective at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, April 8.

The Temiskaming Health Unit reports seven active cases and 131 total cases.

The Sudbury Health Unit reports 19 new cases today and 270 active cases.

The Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit reports 84 new cases today and 681 active cases. There are five new COVID-19 cases in Simcoe County schools being reported today. The area has seen a 44 per cent rise in cases in the past week according to the Medical Officer of Health.

In northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 299 cases, rate of 230.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 300 cases. There are 11 known active cases. There have been six confirmed cases of the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) variant, and 27 confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are 23 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 129 cases, rate of 394.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 131 cases. There are seven known active cases. There has been one case of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are 20 tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,575 cases, rate of 791.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,581. There are 265 known active cases. There are five confirmed UK (B.1.1.7) variants of concern. There are 455 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Algoma Public Health: 249 cases, rate of 217.6 per 100,000 people. There are 22 known active cases. Four tests have screened positive for a variant of concern but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 382 cases, rate of 457.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 384 cases. There are 30 known active cases. There have been two confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are three tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 717 cases, rate of 817.8 per 100,000 people. There are 43 known active cases. There are five confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. There are 17 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 2,924 cases, rate of 1949.9 per 100,000 people.  The health unit has reported 2,934 cases. There are 148 known active cases. There are four tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. 

To slow the spread of COVID-19 there is a provincial shutdown in effect. It started April 3 and is in place for at least 28 days. The rules for the shutdown can be found here.

Public Health Ontario has reported 3,215 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 6).

Today's report includes 2,407 recoveries and 17 new deaths.  

The deaths reported today include two people between 40 and 59 years old, seven people between 60 and 79 years old, and eight people over the age of 79 years old.

One of the people whose death was reported today was a resident of a long-term-care facility.

The province has reported 97 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 20 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The April 7 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 27,359 active cases, which is up from 26,658 yesterday
  • 1,397 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,151 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 504 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 510 yesterday) and 311 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 310 reported yesterday)
  • The province reported 49,889 tests were processed yesterday resulting in an 6.7 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 41,624 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 12.6 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 3,215 new cases reported today, 1,095 are from Toronto, 596 cases are from Peel, 342 are from York Region, and 68 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 70 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 51 at retirement homes, and 41 at hospitals. 
  • The new cases reported today include 620 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,188 people between 20 and 39 years old, 929 people between 40 and 59 years old, 392 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 82 people aged 80 and over.

Variants of concern (Ontario-wide)

  • 2,291 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • 72 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • 120 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 
  • Another 28,12 cases have screened positive with a mutation detected, but the lineage for the variant strain not yet sequenced.
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccines

  • There were 104,382 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 6, which is up from 76,199 doses on April 5.
  • As of 6 p.m. on April 6, the province reported 2,726,221 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 324,783 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 370,817cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 335,983 recoveries and 7,475 deaths, of which 3,904 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,494.7 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 126.8 cases per 100,000 people, which is an increase of 25.4 per cent from last week (March 22-28).
