Two new cases today, five still active

Five active cases in the North Bay Parry Sound District as of 3 p.m. today, with two new cases to report.

The two latest are both outbreak-associated, one is isolating and one is resolved.

In the district 32 preliminary or confirmed VOC cases have been reported, 14 are identified as South African (all in Nipissing) and two are U.K. (both in Parry Sound)

Also, it was announced today that frontline health workers at the North Bay hospital have started getting vaccinated.

The Timiskaming Health Unit reports two active cases. Yesterday a South African variant was confirmed in Timiskaming district.

The Sudbury Health Unit reports 85 active cases, a jump of 32 today.

The Simcoe-Muskoka Health Unit reports 468 active cases, with 32 new ones reported today.

Public Health Ontario has reported 966 new cases of COVID-19 today (March 2).

Today's report includes 979 recoveries and 11 new deaths, of which, two were long-term care residents.

The deaths reported today include one person between 40 and 59 years old, four people between 60 and 79 years old, and six people aged 80 or older.

In northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 261 cases, rate of 201.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 265 cases. There are five known active cases. There are 14 confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. The shutdown and stay-at-home order are still in effect in the region until at least March 8.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 93 cases, rate of 284.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 94 cases. There are two known active cases. There is one confirmed case of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. The region is in the green - prevent zone.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 655 cases, rate of 329.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 667 cases. There are 85 known active cases. There are three confirmed variants of concern (VOC) cases, both are the UK (B.1.1.7) strain. The region is in the orange - restrict zone.
  • Algoma Public Health: 200 cases, rate of 174.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 199 cases. There are five known active cases. The region is in the yellow - protect zone.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 339 cases, rate of 406.3 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 338 cases. There are 13 known active cases. The region is in the orange - restrict zone.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 476 cases, rate of 542.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 479 confirmed cases. There are 54 known active cases. There is one confirmed case of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. The region is in the yellow - protect zone.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 1,679 cases, rate of 1,119.6 per 100,000 people.  The health unit has reported 1,668 cases, There are 376 known active cases. The region is in the grey - lockdown level.

The province has reported 56 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and six new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The March 2 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 10,546 active cases, which is down from 10,570 yesterday
  • 677 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 659 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 284 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 280) and 189 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 175 yesterday)
  • The province reported 30,767 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 2.9 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 31,074 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 11.1 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 966 new cases reported today, 253 are from Toronto, 223 cases are from Peel, 99 are from York Region, and 36 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 106 active outbreaks at long-term care homes.
  • The new cases reported today include 183 individuals aged 19 and under, 389 people between 20 and 39 years old, 249 people between 40 and 59 years old, 119 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 28 people aged 80 and over.

Variants of concern

  • The province has reported 542 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • The province has reported 27 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • The province has reported 3 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccine update for March 1:

  • There were 22,326 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on March 1, which is up from 17,424 administered on Feb. 28. 
  • As of 8 p.m. on March 1, the province reported 727,021 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 264,896 people have been fully vaccinated, having received two doses of vaccine.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 302,805 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 285,262 recoveries and 6,997 deaths, of which 3,867 were individuals living in long-term care homes.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,037 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 51.2 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 2.8 per cent from last week (Feb. 14-20).
