Time running out for PADDLE program to find a new home

'We are looking but we have such a unique group that we need a unique space so that has been a bit challenging to find'

As of the end of August, the program that supports 35 participants and their families who have developmental disabilities, physical disabilities and often dual diagnosis will need to find a new home.

The current facility located at Chippewa Secondary School will be made unavailable to the organization due to the recommendations through the ARC school review process.

Megan Johnson is the PADDLE executive director.  She says the unique needs of the program make finding a new location very difficult.

“We have not found the perfect space yet, that has not happened. We are looking but we have such a unique group that we need a unique space so that has been a bit challenging to find,” said Johnson about their search for a new home that needs to be 3000 to 3500 square feet.

“The biggest challenge being onsite parking that is accessible and a place that will give us a dedicated washroom facility because we need that because the people we serve have some fairly chronic health issues - definitely complex care required.”

While time is running out, officials with PADDLE are not getting involved in the political school closure controversy.

“We have been really lucky to be at Chippewa for almost 11 years since the inception of the program,” said Johnson.

“It was an incredible opportunity for us. The lease for us was extremely fair financially and we have been part of the school community in a real positive way.”

Johnson, also thanks community leaders like Mayor Al McDonald for creating awareness of their situation through social media.

The organization is hosting their annual PADDLE Pasta Dinner Fundraiser on May 31st  at the Elks Lodge.

Johnson says all proceeds will go towards renovations of our new space. Tickets available from PADDLE ([email protected] or 705-493-2401 ) or online @ http://www.tangr.co
