These local students may prevent you from being a victim of crime

Over the next two weeks you may see them out in the community with either our ‘Door Hanger Initiative’ or at the malls and parking lots putting reminders on your windshield from the 'Lock it or lose it Program'

A program called "Youth in Policing Initiative" is helping with a public education event that may help reduce crime.

This year the North Bay Police Service has two YIPI students; Kyle McDiarmid from Widdifield High School and Samantha Adams from Algonquin High School.

This program, sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services, provides jobs for youth between the ages of 15 to 18 to work with police departments across Ontario.

"Youth can develop skills that could lead to a possible career in policing," says Const. John Schultz. "Youth have an opportunity to work in a variety of areas, including information technology, forensic identification, community events and traffic safety."

These YIPI students are assigned to the Community Programs Section. Part of their ‘duties’ this year involve helping to educate members of the public.

Over the next two weeks you may see them out in the community with the ‘Door Hanger Initiative’ or at the malls and parking lots putting reminders on your windshield from the “Lock it or lose it Program.”

"Our Door Hanger Initiative has messaging for ‘lock it or lose it’, ‘drive sober’ and ‘don’t be a victim of fraud’ says Schultz. "It also contains several phone numbers that our police service is consistently asked for. Now you can have it right at hand."

Samantha and Kyle will start distributing these tomorrow to neighbourhoods in Callander and will continue next week in North Bay.
