Text messaged extortion leads to charges against North Bay woman

A North Bay woman faces numerous charges after police broke up a text messaged extortion attempt.

Between March 2 and 4, police say a woman sent multiple text messages to a person known to her. The messages were made to extort money from the victim and involved threats of violence to members of the victim’s family living in the North Bay area.

The victim made payments totalling several hundred dollars to the extortionist and then reported the matter to the North Bay Police.  

An investigation began on March 4 and identified the accused, who was arrested at her North Bay home yesterday afternoon.

North Bay Police arrested a 45-year-old North Bay woman on March 4 and charged her with:

  • Extortion
  • False Information
  • Public mischief
  • Two counts of uttering a threat to cause death

The woman was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the court on April 13.

Police say In order to protect the identity of the victim, they will not be releasing the name of the accused.
