Temiskaming domestic assault includes choking victim and cruelty to animal charges

Further investigation revealed that the assaults were both historical and recent in nature

A disturbing number and type of charges have been laid by Temiskaming OPP after a domestic assault investigation this week.

On January 10, shortly after 9:30 a.m. police responded to a domestic assault call, on Highway 11 Temiskaming Shores.

Police say a person was assaulting a partner, but the victim was able to escape when other people intervened. 

Police arrived moments later, but the attacker had fled in a vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that the assaults were both historical and recent in nature, occurring between October 2021 and January 2022 in Temiskaming Shores and nearby Armstrong Township.

This morning, shortly before 1:30 a.m. police arrived at a house in Armstrong Township where they found and arrested the accused.  

 A 42-year-old resident of Armstrong Township faces multiple charges including::

  • Two counts of assault causing bodily harm - choke, suffocate or strangle
  • Two counts of assault
  • Two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • Two counts of uttering threats to damage or injure an animal
  • Cruelty to animals causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury,
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Nine counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition,
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Failure to comply with a release order
  • Fail to comply with a probation order

The accused was held for abBail hearing, and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date, in Temiskaming Shores. 

The OPP say they will not be releasing the name of the accused in order to protect the identity of the victims.
