Lifelong naturalist and volunteer Dick Tafel (pictured) was awarded with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal on Saturday by Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli.

A retired lawyer, Tafel was instrumental in the creation of Laurier Woods - a 100 acre natural habitat in the middle of North Bay.

Fedeli surprised Tafel with his medal at a Laurier Woods plaque unveiling ceremony in front of friends, family and volunteers.

“I couldn’t imagine a better occasion than this to honour Dick with this award,” said Fedeli.

“Dick’s dedication to nature and preserving our local environment stretches over decades, and I’m very pleased he was nominated.”

Saturday’s presentation was one of 14 Fedeli is making over the course of this Jubilee year.

The Diamond Jubilee Medal is a commemorative medal created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the Throne and as a way to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
