Sweet week for the North Bay and District Humane Society

'I don’t have pets myself, but I think they do a good job' Andrea Raftis

There is a big appetite in the community not only for cupcakes but for helping the North Bay and District Humane Society.

National Cup Cake Day is a fundraising initiative of the Ontario SPCA, but the local humane society has turned it into a weeklong event.

“The North Bay and District Humane Society participates in that day, but we’ve turned it into a full week event, so every day we’ve got a different activity,” said Liam Cullin executive director of the North Bay and District Humane Society.

If Saturday’s sales at Parker’s Your Independent Grocer are any indication, it will be a profitable week.

“Based on our experience last year, we actually doubled our order, thinking we would have a few extra. Last year we were supposed to be here all day and we sold out by noon. And we’re easily on our way to selling out here again today.
 said Cullin.

The cupcakes sell for $10 for six.

Andrea Raftis stopped by the cupcake table to purchase a dozen of the sweet treats.

“They need the money, and the dogs and the cats need to be well looked after,” said Raftis.

“I don’t have pets myself, but I have on occasion a dog that has been lost and came into my yard and I have called them to come and help locate the owner of the pet. So, I think they do a good job. They are a benefit to North Bay.”

Cullin explains that the money helps with expenses associated with animal care.

“Every year we have probably 2-thousand animals come through our door for various reasons. Some come through as strays, lots come through surrendered by families who can no longer care for their animals. We also get ones transferred in from other communities who have an overabundance of pets in their community. So, it helps us care for those animals. We give them flea treatments, it helps with spay and neuter services, vaccinations, everything along those lines to get them ready to find their next home.”

The fundraiser continues to grow every year.

“In 2018 we raised about $3,000. Last year we raised more than $8,000. This year our goal is to top $10.000,” said Cullin.

Twiggs Coffee Roasters has in-store sales starting Tuesday at its McKeown and Fraser locations.

Orchards Fresh Food Market on Trout Lake Road has cupcakes available starting Tuesday, Chez Jean-Marc Bakery in Sturgeon Falls starts its event Wednesday, and Vegan Dad Bakery/The North Star Diner on Algonquin has pre-order pickup on Thursday.

“People can visit our website and see all the locations, dates and times. We are still taking pre-orders throughout the week.”
