A man that was stopped for speeding yesterday on Highway 11 now faces some serious drug charges.

Last night at 11 p.m.,  Almaguin Highlands OPP officers were patrolling on Highway 11 in Armour Township near Burk's Falls when a vehicle was stopped for speeding.

"The driver was found to be a suspended driver in Ontario," says Acting Sergeant Shona Camirand. "Further investigation led to officers arresting the driver for drug trafficking. Officers located over five kilograms of suspected marijuana in the vehicle."

Michael David Cody Nopper, 29, of Woodbridge, Ontario, was arrested and is charged with:

  • Possession of a schedule II substance for the purpose of trafficking,
  • Possession for the purpose of distributing
  • Speeding,
  • Two counts of suspended driving and
  • Drive a motor vehicle with no currently validated permit.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days as a result of the suspended driving Vehicle Impoundment Program.

Anybody caught driving while suspended in Ontario for a Criminal Code conviction will have their vehicle impounded. Regardless of whether the vehicle is borrowed from a friend or family member, used for business or employment purposes, rented or leased, the vehicle will be impounded. This program applies to all motor vehicle types including passenger vehicles, motorcycles, trucks, and buses.

Nopper is scheduled to appear in court in Parry Sound today.
