More than 50 students have been working hard at the Summer Challenge 2019 in preparation for the production “Newsies” which starts this Thursday evening at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall.

The production is based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, this new Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys' expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action.

Megan McArthur is part of the show.  The St. Joseph-Scollard Hall student says the excitement for the show is building.

“Everyone is working really hard it is an amazing production,” McArthur told Rogers Radio.

"They {the paper boys) are rebelling to get their rights back and be paid equally to everyone else.”

The production features plenty of music, which is appropriate for all ages.

Kyller McKay, who will be going into grade nine at SJSH this fall, is looking forward to hitting the stage again with the program.

"I was in it last year, but only had an assemble part, this year I have one of the leads and I'm very proud to say how the show is coming together, it's a really great show," he told Rogers Radio.

The Nipissing Parry-Sound Catholic District School Board Summer Challenge theatre Production takes the stage this Thursday through Saturday, July 18-20th, at the Bishop Carter Auditorium, St. Joseph-Scollard Hall.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the school office and Creative Learning.
