At its regular meeting on June 15, Conseil scolaire public du Nord-Est de l’Ontario (CSPNE) adopted a resolution authorizing the administration to begin the process of changing the name of École secondaire publique Northern in Sturgeon Falls.
Several months ago, Board trustees received a letter from the school council requesting that they consider the possibility of changing the name of École secondaire publique Northern.
"According to the parents initiating the request, since the school shares the same name as the English-language secondary school, as well as the same building, the community believes that it is a bilingual school rather than a French-language public school in its own right," says a news release. "The request from the school council to CSPNE proposes that a distinct Francophone identity be created at École secondaire publique Northern."
CSPNE had invited students, parents and staff to respond to a short survey on the possibility of changing the name of École secondaire publique Northern. Survey results are in favour of changing the name.
CSPNE will launch the research, analytical and creative process using the expertise of marketing firm Studio 123.
"The next phases will then be identified and undertaken to ensure that the new identity of this French-language public school in West Nipissing respects and reflects the school’s current and historical perspectives as well as its vision for the future," says the release.
