In the largest student vote of a Joint Student Executive Council (JSEC) referendum, 844 students at Nipissing University and Canadore College or 13.26% and 15.45% respectively of the paid members, voted for a Student Centre Referendum which would either see the Student Centre fee increase or remain as is.

The vote was 651 in favor (77%), 188 against (22%), and 5 spoiled (1%).

This successful referendum will see a new 37, 000 sq ft. complex added to the existing 23,000 Student to make one complete facility to be built at the main campus where new services would be offered, including:

• Fair Trade/Organic Coffee House
• Club Offices
• Proper Food Bank Services
• Environmental Gold Leeds Certified Building (ex. green roof, ground source heating etc.)
• Graduation/Events Hall
• Natural/Recycled Material Finishes
• Small Pub/Restaurant
• Lounge/Study areas

JSEC Directors will meet this week to ratify the referendum results, pending investigation of an alleged infraction of the JSEC bylaws by the Chief returning Officer. JSEC will review evidence to determine if investigation is warranted.

CSRC and NUSU wishes to thank all students who participated in the process of the expansion and renovation of The Student Centre for future progress of all student life here at Canadore College and Nipissing University towards the building of an environmentally friendly, socially progressive facility that will offer many services for years to come.
