District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board
The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board would like people to know that there is assistance for citizens struggling to pay their shelter costs. Anyone living on a low or fixed income in the Nipissing District could qualify for funding to help with such things as energy costs, rent arrears and mortgage payments. The funding is available through the Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI) Fund.
“Citizens experiencing hardship to maintain their home or avoid eviction are among those who may qualify for assistance through the CHPI Fund,” says DNSSAB Board Chair, George Maroosis.
“It’s been an unusually cold winter and that has made it tougher for people, some of whom may be forced to choose between paying their hydro bill or buying groceries. The DNSSAB is working with municipalities and other community organizations to assist citizens through this fund.”
In order to qualify for the funding, applicants must undergo a means test, which means they will be asked about their income and current assets. Anyone in need is urged to call (705)474-2151 ext. 3167 or 1-877-829-5121 ext. 3167 and someone will help determine eligibility, and what documentation is needed. If approved and all paperwork is in order, applicants could receive payments in a matter of days. Anyone receiving social assistance, such as Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support Payment, may also qualify but must be referred through their caseworker.
Applicants can apply for this grant once every two years.
Also available as part of this fund is a one-time heating costs grant, that is only available until March 31st. Details about this fund include:
