Street artist captures Rebuilt Resources 'fun' atmosphere in outdoor mural

'It seems if you use spray cans, people get very uncomfortable. I guarantee if I were out here with a roller and some paint brushes, I wouldn't have half the looks that I do.' Jordan Seguin, street artist

Jordan Seguin is a busy young man. Not only is he a car salesman, but he also runs his own paintball shop and is a street artist. His latest artwork is on display at Rebuilt Resources on Regina Street in North Bay.

"I wouldn't call it a job, it's just a hobby to me. But for the right people, I don't mind helping out the community every now and then."

Rebuilt Resources is a second-hand store that employs people with disabilities.

Chief Executive Officer Maureen Brazeau was looking for someone to transform the side wall of the building, from a blank canvas, into a work of art.

"I've always liked graffiti. I saw some of the work he did in a building and found out who he was, and tracked him down to see if he would do ours," said Brazeau. "I think it's fun. It represents who we are as that fun place."

Seguin explains that his work is very fluid.

"The whole theme is just kind of thought of as I go along. I pick colour schemes and designs based on a rough idea and just take it from there. I try and find the right section for the size of each piece of artwork. I base it on the angles of the wall and working with the windows. I have to find things with the proper space and adjust to them. I try not to plan too much because it makes it easier to adjust as I go along. If I over plan everything, it won't turn out the way I want it to."

The mural is big and vibrant, incorporating the business name and slogan, 'Come Treasure Hunt With Us.'

One of the biggest challenges Seguin faced was working around the weather.

"This summer has definitely been a challenge for the poor boy to get this done," said Brazeau. "It's nice and bright and very impressive. It has that easy, fun flair to it. He did the Rebuilt Resources name in multi-colors which I really love. It's just really good art."

Seguin works with aerosol spray cans.

"I'll use brushes on certain things if they're kind of finer detail, but I'm pretty comfortable with the can for most things. There's an array of different caps that you can use for different thicknesses and different edges. So as long as you understand your caps and you have good quality paint, it's pretty easy to do what I want to do," says Seguin.

"It's good paint that I order in. It's pretty UV resistant so the colour doesn't fade too bad. It's not going to run or streak. All this was started at the beginning of the season, and all the rain that we've had, none of it has faded or washed away," said Seguin.

His work has people talking.

"You have a lot of people stop and ask a lot of questions. It seems if you use spray cans, people get very uncomfortable. I guarantee if I were out here with a roller and some paint brushes, I wouldn't have half the looks that I do."
