A horrible home invasion yesterday has one man in jail, and a young family traumatized after being threatened with a knife.

Police say yesterday at approximately 5 a.m., a man, a stranger, entered the unit of a downtown residential building.

The female resident awoke to the noise he made on entry.

She immediately called 9-1-1 and went to a nearby room, where she saw the man assaulting her young child.

When the woman tried to protect her child, police say he held a kitchen knife to her to prevent the child from escaping.

The woman then instructed her two young children to run to the neighbour's home, where they escaped to safety.

Police say the man, who was still holding a knife at the time, dragged the woman outside.

Police arrived at the scene and saw them both come out of the building. The man then tried to escape the scene on foot.

Following a short chase, police stopped the man on the 600 block of Cassells Street.

A witness says the man was tasered two or three times by police before being brought under control and arrested. The witness says it took six police officers to subdue the man.

Following an investigation into the break and enter and assault with a weapon North Bay Police arrested and charged:

Nathan Omer Carriere, age 22, of North Bay with:

  • One count of break, enter and commit an indictable offence;
  • One count of assault;
  • One count of forcible confinement;
  • One count of assault with a weapon;
  • One count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • Three counts of assault police; and
  • Two counts of breach of conditional sentence order.

Police say Carriere assaulted police before and after his arrest, and remains in custody and will appear in court for a show cause hearing today.

Prior to this occurrence, he was unknown to his victims, who required medical treatment for their non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile North Bay Police Service is hoping to calm public fears in the wake of the attack.

"Random acts of violence such as the one described above are rare occurrences in our community," says a news release. "Police rely on the help of members of this community to inform police when people and property are at risk. Call 9-1-1 immediately to report a crime in progress or about to occur, for a situation where serious injury can occur, and for any suspicious activity. Police also advise residents to lock the doors of their homes and vehicles."
