'He's a good football player, awesome student and put those things together and he is a very deserving candidate to go out west and represent not only the school but our area as well'

North Bay’s James Piper is heading to the Grey Cup.

But the West Ferris Trojans star receiver/tight end isn’t going as a fan, he has been chosen to the 2019 Nissan All-Canadian Football team.

The 2019 Nissan All-Canadian TITAN team, selected as part of the sixth annual Nissan Kickoff Project, will travel to Calgary for a four-day sporting opportunity to experience the 107th Grey Cup festivities.

As part of their experience, the high school student-athletes will meet and train with peers from across Canada, attend the 2019 CFL Awards, play in an exhibition game on November 23 at Shouldice Athletic Park, and watch the 107th Grey Cup Championship game live at McMahon Stadium.

Mark Robertson, the West Ferris Trojans head football coach, believes Piper is a perfect choice for the TITAN team which also selected Trojans quarterback Mason McGrisken in the events inaugural team in 2018.

“He’s a big target and he catches the ball really well and runs well after the catch and people have seen that in the league the past three years,” said Robertson.

“I think what people might not be aware of are his academics. He has about a 90 per cent average and obviously, that makes him an outstanding recruit for universities. He is a guy who is going to survive the rigours of university, be able to balance that off with football so good football player, awesome student and put those things together and he is a very deserving candidate to go out west and represent not only the school but our area as well.”

While Piper is excited for the TITAN opportunity, he still has some football to play as the Trojans host the NOSSA final on Saturday at the Steve Omischl Sports Complex as they take on Korah from Sault Ste. Marie with kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
