What would 50,000 pennies look like? This was a question posed by students of Mme Thayer’s grade 5/6 class at St. Francis school. The question motivated the students to collect 51,000 pennies for “The Gathering Place" in North Bay.

The students made posters, produced commercials that they read during morning announcements, and sent out reminders to everyone.

The students placed penny jars in all the classrooms and soon the pennies started coming in from everyone.

Thousands of pennies were counted, rolled then graphed by students. On Thursday, December 13, the students donated their goal of 51,000 pennies to Jill Clark, Executive Director of "The Gathering Place".

“This was a great effort from a terrific group of students” said Susan van Schaayk, Principal of St. Francis school.
