Sprucing up the downtown

I think the different sections are beautiful in their own right and there are element that are repeated throughout so hopefully that will bring it together a little bit.

The downtown walkway between Main St. and the parking garage is getting a facelift as a group of students, including Chelsea Bourget, donate their talents.

"I'm doing a mural as part of the BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) program at Nipissing University as part of my print making class," Bourget told BayToday. "My teacher Laura Peterson encouraged me to do a large scale project and she suggested that Michelle Trudeau of the FrameMaker (on Main St.) could offer a space for us and she was so kind she even bought us the paint so we could redo the entire mural, so we primed it "

There are five artists working on the wall art.

"It was a very interesting process because the collaboration did not go as I thought it was going to but I think the different sections are beautiful in their own right and there are element that are repeated throughout so hopefully that will bring it together a little bit.

Bourget has high praise for her four year program.

"It's at the Monastery, so it's not part of the main campus, and as a subsection of that there is a sculpture studio at the corner of Gormanville and Jane. I'm primarily a sculptor but the Monastery is a really, really beautiful place to learn. All of our lectures are held in the chapel."

Bourget is hoping to be working on monuments in the next six months.

To see more of Chelsea's work, check out the walkway at 168 Main St. W. Students  will be working there the rest of this week.
