BayToday has learned that the North Bay Regional Health Centre's first COVID-19 patient transfer from southern Ontario is a woman from California who came up to Ontario for a family visit when she contracted COVID-19.

A source told BayToday the woman, who is on a ventilator, is being transferred from Ajax to the North Bay Regional Health Centre today.

On Tuesday, the North Bay Regional Health Centre confirmed to TVO that the local hospital was preparing to take southern Ontario COVID-19 patients.

"Any day, we could be asked to ramp down in order to accommodate ICU patients from Toronto,” Dr. Jennifer Mihill, NBRHC’s COVID-19 critical-care-preparedness lead told TVO.

BayToday reached out to the North Bay Regional Health Centre for comment late Tuesday afternoon.

Late Wednesday morning the hospital confirmed a transfer in an email to BayToday.

"The NBRHC is still awaiting a COVID-19 patient transfer from another facility," Paul Heinrich, hospital CEO and President at NBRHC stated.

Mihill told TVO that she receives notice of patient transfers from the Ontario Critical Care Command Centre.

“We receive a complete list of where patients are going from what hospital to what hospital,” she said.
