It appears South River’s only grocery store will be closing its doors at the end of the month.

Clayton Filkohazy, a communications official based out of Sobey’s head office in Calgary, told Rogers radio the last day of operations will be on Saturday, April 28th.

“It’s never an easy decision to close a store, particularly with the impact it has on customers, staff and the community,” he said.

“Due to various operational reasons we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close the store.”

Sobey’s would not comment on any more details of the closure, even though there has been speculation another grocery store will open at the same location.

"Any decisions related to the future use of the site will be determined by the landlord, Sobeys Inc. does not own the property,” he told Rogers radio.

Filkohazy added that Foodland employees found out about closure in mid-March.
