The City of North Bay is enhancing its smoking rules to include added protections for residents and visitors from second-hand smoke.

Adopted this week by Council, amendments to the City’s smoking bylaw prohibit smoking and vaping of any substance, including the use of water pipes, in all places where smoking is prohibited.

Smoking and vaping in all City parks and on all City property, including trails and beaches is also prohibited, with the exception of approved Designated Smoking Areas (DSAs), both on a permanent basis and, for special occasions, on a temporary basis. DSA locations will include Memorial Gardens and Pete Palangio Arena.

The restrictions, which do not apply to streets and sidewalks are effective immediately.

City officials say the initial focus of the new smoking rules will be on education rather than enforcement.

“We’re pleased to be taking this proactive step towards building a healthier community,” said Coun. Tanya Vrebosch, Chairwoman of Council’s General Government Committee.

“There are varying viewpoints as to the appropriate scope of smoking restrictions at the municipal level, but all Council members are in agreement that the City has an important role to play in reducing exposure to second hand smoke in our public places.”

Smoke of all kinds, including cannabis, is already prohibited under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act in all indoor public places and workplaces and in many outdoor spaces, including daycare grounds, within 20 meters of a playground or publically-owned sporting area and within nine meters of bar and restaurant patios. It also prohibits smoking in vehicles where children are passengers.

The City is also inviting public input on the potential of further restrictions on smoking at workplaces within the municipality. A public consultation open house is set to take place July 3rd at North Bay City Hall from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Comments and questions can also be submitted electronically at [email protected].

“Send us your questions or concerns. We are asking for any feedback you may have on smoking regulations, both existing and proposed,” said Vrebosch. “We encourage you to attend the open house or contact us via email.”
