Six new cases, 34 active locally as provincial vaccinations top 50 per cent

The North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit reports six new cases today, five of them in Nipissing.

It brings to 397 the total of cases since the pandemic began.

There are 34 active cases, 10 of those are in Nipissing.

There have been 51,373 doses given out, representing 47 per cent of the over 18 population and just below the provincial average.

Ontario has administered first doses of the COVID-19 vaccines to over 50 per cent of Ontarians aged 18 and over. Over one million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ontario since the start of May, and the province remains on track to have administered first doses to 65 per cent of Ontarians aged 18 and over by the end of May.

The Timiskaming Health Unit reports six active cases. Also today, Dr. Glenn Corneil, Acting Medical Officer of Health declared the end of the outbreak of COVID-19 at Kirkland Lake Gold. The Timiskaming Health Unit worked with representatives from Kirkland Lake Gold to ensure thorough completion of contact tracing. The mine took all necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

The Sudbury Health Unit reports nine new cases today. They have 84 active cases.

And the Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit reports 72 new cases with 822 active cases.

As of May 11, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, in partnership with the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, regional health sector, municipal partnerships, and local primary care teams have administered over 222,800 vaccine doses which include over 10,300 AstraZeneca doses administered by primary care teams. Local pharmacies have also administered over 23,400 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. There have also been more than 1,150 doses administered to health care workers in South Simcoe by Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Over 90 percent of Long-Term Care and Retirement Home residents in Simcoe Muskoka have received their first dose of vaccine, with the majority having already received their second dose.
