SIU investigates Mattawa injury

TORONTO - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances surrounding an injured man.

On July 29, 2007 at approximately 0045 hrs members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Mattawa Detachment responded to a person to check near the Ottawa River in Mattawa.

As the officers approached, the man ran towards the
Ottawa River and jumped into the water.

The man surfaced and was unable to move.

The attending officers assisted the male.

The male was transported to Mattawa Hospital, then to North Bay Hospital, and was airlifted to Hamilton
General Hospital where his injuries are being assessed and treated.

At 0136 hrs the Special Investigations Unit was notified by the OPP of the injury.

Five SIU investigators, including two Forensic Identification Technicians attended the scene and commenced an investigation.

The SIU has designated one witness officer and one subject officer.

The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2293 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death.

Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation.

The director's decision is reported to the attorney general.
