Sinkhole closes bike trail

The trail is closed for the public’s safety until the work can be done to repair the area

A sinkhole on the Kinsmen Trail behind Chippewa Secondary School has prompted the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to close that portion of the trail.

“A failed culvert, together with the rain, is causing erosion under the trail. We’ve closed the trail for the public’s safety until the work can be done to repair the area,” said Troy Storms, NBMCA’s Supervisor of Field Operations.

Barricades and detour signs have been put in place.

Trail users will have to detour the trail by following Chippewa St. W. in front of the high school between High St and the north parking lot of the school. Work on repairing the trail is expected to begin in the next few days.

The 7.2 km Kinsmen Trail follows the shoreline of Chippewa Creek from Airport Road to Amelia Beach on Lake Nipissing.  It includes the 3.2 km Chippewa Creek EcoPath, a community initiative to restore and enhance the natural and heritage values of the creek through stewardship and education.
