Temiskaming OPP say a motorist is in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries after a collision with a train on one of New Liskeard's main streets last Wednesday.

The collision happened shortly before 10 a.m., as police responded to a call for a motor vehicle collision on Whitewood Avenue.

Investigation revealed that a vehicle was travelling westbound on Whitewood near Jaffray Street and a train was southbound when the two collided.

The vehicle was dragged a short distance before coming to a stop on a nearby sidewalk.

The lone occupant of the vehicle, was rushed to hospital by the Temiskaming Emergency Medical Service.

Whitewood Avenue was closed for some time by the crash.

"When approaching the railway crossing, slow down, and stop if the lights are flashing," says Inspector Joel Breault of the Temiskaming Detachment. "Do not cross the tracks until the lights have stopped flashing and the train has passed. Don't make a split-second decision that could cost you your life or someone else's."
