Carolyn Johnson will be the program speaker at the Rotary Club of North Bay luncheon meeting on Monday September 24th, 2012.

Carolyn has a passion for reading and a passion for instilling that love in children. She is responsible for the Culture of Reading Program (CORP) within the Guatemala Literacy Program. Through the CORP initiative Carolyn is teaching an entire nation how to read.

Guatemala has been horribly broken by a civil war that lasted 36 years from 1960 to 1996. The war tore the country apart. Because of the civil war education was “put on the back burner” resulting in Guatemala having one of the highest literacy rates in Latin America and being stricken by a high rate of poverty.

According to Carolyn Johnson these Kids (in Guatemala) need the same opportunities as our own kids do. “If they are going to have good jobs, and if they’re going to make informed decisions, they need access to information. And access to information can only come through being able to read and being able to problem-solve.

The Rotary Club of North Bay has been supporting the Guatemala Literacy Project for the past seven years.
