Sport North Bay is inviting sports enthusiasts in the area to Steve Omischl Sports Complex on Saturday morning.

"Our MP Anthony Rota has a significant announcement to share with us," Sport North Bay stated on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

The event is expected to take place at 9 a.m. at the Steve Omischl Sports Complex on Saturday, June 11.

Sport North Bay says North Bay councillor Johanne Brousseau, is expected to be in attendance.

"We hope to see you there," the post stated.

The Steve Omischl Sports Complex has been targeted as a potential location for the new community arena project that was put on hold during the pandemic and put on the back burner by city council due to the Cassellholme project.

Early in the spring, Mayor Al McDonald told BayToday's Jeff Turl that work is progressing on getting a new rink in the West Ferris area of the city.

"Shame on us for not getting it done sooner but it can't drop off the table because there will be so many families that won't be able to use the arena," McDonald said.

"We're working on it. It's not going as fast as we want, but the West Ferris Arena, it's not going to be long before the engineers say 'you can't use that building anymore.'"
