On Wednesday, members of 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay and Canadian Cancer Society came together for a Lunch and Learn to officially launch Relay For Life and to kick-off recruiting military teams and participants.

2016 marks the 16th year that 22 Wing has proudly hosted Relay For Life, the signature fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Gil Pharand of the Canadian Cancer Society passed the baton to Colonel Henrik Smith, 22 Wing Commander, in a symbolic gesture to get the ball rolling.

“Members of 22 Wing have stepped up and accepted the baton since the inception of Relay For Life in North Bay.  Over the past 15 years, more than $3.4 million has been raised through Relay in our community.  Thank you for the thousands of man hours and hundreds of volunteers you have provided – we could not have done it without you.  We look forward to our continued partnership,” Pharand stated.

Colonel Henrik Smith, 22 Wing Commander added, “On behalf of the men and women of 22 Wing, it is a pleasure to accept the Relay For Life baton in support of this event.  The fight against cancer is as important as the NORAD mission we do here at the Wing every day and we are honoured to stand side by side with the community of North Bay.  We are very proud of the role the Wing plays in raising an average of $200 000 a year through Relay For Life and we hope to continue the tradition for many years to come.”

Relay For Life is a fun and inspiring fundraising event for people of any age and fitness level. Canadians unite for an event that challenges teams to fundraise and take turns walking or running around a track to meet individual distance goals and show their support for people living with cancer.

Relay For Life takes place in North Bay on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 6PM to midnight.
