Ontario is building on its record of strong support for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

New investments in two programs in the North East region will help 76 area youth and adults who are waiting for daily living and respite services that encourage independence, skills development and community participation.

Special Services at Home provides personal growth and development support and respite for people and their families. The Passport program helps adults who have left school find ways to learn new skills and participate in their communities.

The North East Region will receive an additional $1,045,000 in funding through this investment – part of an additional $40 million the government set aside for developmental services in the 2011 Budget – Turning the Corner.

People with a developmental disability who need support urgently will also benefit – including people with aging parents who can no longer care for them, and adults who are leaving the care of a children’s aid society.

This investment is a part of Ontario’s commitment to supporting people with developmental disabilities to participate fully in their communities.

"I am pleased to see this additional funding for developmental services for the residents of the North East region,” said Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing. “It is important to our government to continue to support our community members with developmental disabilities and their families through these important programs.”

“This new investment will help many more people with a developmental disability get the support they need to live, work and participate in a wide range of activities in their communities,” said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services.
