Two Ontario men pleaded guilty and were fined a total of $3,000 for bear hunting offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

Douglas Oshell of Powassan was fined $1,500 and received a one-year bear-only hunting licence suspension for hunting black bear without a licence.

Dave Fairbairn of Wahnapitae was fined $1,500 for allowing the bear to spoil.

Court heard that on October 21, 2013, Oshell and Fairbairn were moose hunting in Pringle Township.

During this time, Oshell shot a black bear that was subsequently tagged by Fairbairn.

On November 10, 2013, conservation officers working the gun season for deer inspected a hunting camp and discovered the head, paws and two hind quarters of the black bear and that the meat had spoiled.

Justice of the Peace Lauren Scully heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on February 19, 2014.

The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds hunters that it is illegal to let the flesh of any harvested game wildlife that is suitable for food, become spoiled or abandoned, including black bear.
