Powassan holds Humboldt vigil

'It’s important that as Canadians we come together to show the community of Humboldt Saskatchewan, the Bronco Players and Families that we are all thinking of them and sending our thoughts and love'

Despite near whiteout conditions outside, close to 250 people braved the storm and packed into the Powassan Sportsplex for a vigil to honour the tragedy that occurred in Humboldt.

Much like Humboldt, the community of Powassan feels a strong connection as it is one of many small towns in Canada that are home to a junior hockey team.

Minor hockey officials, young hockey players, families, members of the Powassan Voodoos hockey team, and caring citizens congregated on the floor of the Sportsplex arena. They listened to messages from Local MPP Vic Fedeli, MP Anthony Rota and of course Powassan Mayor Peter McIsaac.

“It’s important that as Canadians we come together to show the community of Humboldt Saskatchewan, the Bronco Players and Families that we are all thinking of them and sending our thoughts and love,” stated McIsaac.

The community had a book signing, showed off a Humboldt Broncos Wreath made by Powassan Flowers, and then at the end, the group gathered for a community picture in support and solidarity of the Humboldt Broncos and the community of Humboldt.

The tragic bus accident near Tisdale, Saskatchewan took place a week today, taking the lives of now 16 people from the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team which was on route a playoff game in Nipawin.

Three funerals are taking place today.
