Everyone is concerned with criminal activity, and much of that comes from common break and enters at homes and businesses.

But did you know you can get a free assessment from the OPP to make your home less less vulnerable to b & e's.

Home and business break and enters along with property damage and thefts are serious concerns.

The OPP SafeGuard Ontario Property Security Program is a community-based crime prevention program that is designed to:

  • Reduce break and enter crimes;
  • Increase support to victims of crime;
  • Reduce re-victimization; and
  • Engage and empower citizens to take an active role in helping prevent crimes

If you've been victimized, you can ask to have one of the trained detachment members come to the scene of the crime and conduct an assessment to help make your house or small business less vulnerable to criminal activity.

Crime decreases if the opportunity to commit the crime is reduced or eliminated.

"All suspicious activities need to be reported with as much information as a possible," says an OPP release. "This includes physical descriptions, clothing descriptions, vehicle descriptions, licence plates, addresses or cross streets and the area where they were last seen. Note the suspect's direction of travel."

It is always a good idea to keep a list of the serial numbers of all your electronic devices, tools, generators and to keep this list in a secure area as these numbers can assist with investigations.

"If you are a victim of a break and enter, remember to ensure your safety first, contact police immediately and do not tamper with the crime scene in order to maintain the integrity of any valuable evidence."
