Updated: Police investigating the death of an eight year old boy near New Liskeard

OPP says it is investigating the death of an eight-year-old child that occurred yesterday on Gauthier Road in the Township of Armstrong. north of New Liskeard.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., Temiskaming OPP responded to a call at a residence there and investigation showed that an eight-year-old child had fallen into a farm wagon that contained wheat products.

The child was transported to the hospital by EMS and a short time later was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place at a later date. 

The victim is identified on a gofundme page as Caleb Gravel.

A friend of the family, Bonnie Carr says she is raising money for the Gravel/Varcoe family "who tragically lost her 8 yr old son" in a farming accident.

"Losing a child is unimaginable to begin with along with unexpected expenses," writes Carr. "Caleb was a free spirit who will be missed by many, especially his sister Gina."

The goal is $5,000. Almost $400 had been raised by Wednesday afternoon.

The Temiskaming Crime Unit will be continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Office of the Chief Coroner - Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

The North East Region Forensic Identification Service, the Armstrong Township Fire Department, and the Timiskaming District Emergency Medical Service also assisted on the call.
