North Bay Police Chief Scott Tod is not surprised to hear about small tent cities popping up around the community this summer.

Reports of the areas started to come out in July relating to one location off Worthington Street.

Tod says this is not just a North Bay problem.

"Tent city’s are becoming a norm in many communities," said Tod at an event at Nipissing University last Friday.

"They are not always associated with drug use or criminal activities some are related to poverty and homelessness but we are looking at it from the crime side of it," said Tod.

"There are criminals who are actually taking advantage of people who are living in a vulnerable situation."

Tod adds the topic was discussed recently at the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Conference which took place in Calgary.
