A great 2018 for Colton Point just got even better today as the Hockey News is reporting that the North Bay native signed an entry-level deal with the Dallas Stars today.

"I am proud to announce that I have signed my first pro contract with the Dallas Stars organization," Point said via Twitter on Canada Day.

"I want to thank my loving family and friends who helped me on this journey. I also want to thank Colgate for being my home for the last two years."

The North Bay native and former Trappers AAA goaltender had a fantastic season on the ice both with Colgate University and Team Canada.

Point was named the 2017-18 Colgate Male Athlete of the Year.

Point posted one of the best seasons by a goaltender in program history.

He was named the 16th All-American in program history, the first sophomore to earn the honor, and was also named a Finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, Mike Richter Award, ECAC Hockey Player of the Year as well as Goaltender of the Year.

A second team all-league selection, Point shattered the 55-year-old program record for save percentage at .944, also tied for the highest in the nation, and broke the program's GAA record at 1.74.

Of course, Point, drafted in the 5th round in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Stars, thrived on the international stage as well, winning a gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championships and posted a shutout in the tournament in a win over Slovakia.

The North Bay native shared the gold medal with his hometown in early June.

The news will mean Point will forego his junior season at Colgate and likely vie for a spot on the Texas Stars of the AHL next season. The Stars have starter Ben Bishop under contract and just signed Bruins free agent goaltender Anton Khudobin to a contract to back up Bishop this season.

This is a great situation," said Jim Bedard, the Stars director of goaltending development about the Point signing on the Dallas Stars website.

"You want to get every player in a situation where they can make the most of their time, and I think we'll have that."

Point was in Dallas recently as part of their Development camp.
