OPP have arrested an 83-year-old man after a shocking example of animal cruelty.

On the morning of September 12, members of the East Algoma OPP responded to a call in Elliot Lake.

"The complainant reported that they heard screaming coming from her neighbour's backyard," said Constable Phil Young. "When they looked to see what was going on, they observed their neighbour trying to kill a raccoon in a trap with a pitchfork and a pail of water."

Police arrested and charged the man.

Leslie (Les) Harper, 83, from Elliot Lake was charged with "Cruelty to Animals - Unnecessary pain, suffering or injury."

Harper is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court in Elliot Lake on October 29.
