Patients before politics say doctors

“It scares me that seniors are parked in the ER corridors for days waiting for a hospital bed. This indignity and lack of respect for our seniors, who have spent a life-time contributing to our healthcare system as taxpayers, is unacceptable.”

Members from the group Concerned Ontario Doctors are demanding that the Liberal government put “Patients Before Politics”.

At a rally last weekend, nearly 200 protesters converged outside of the Whitby Liberal campaign headquarters to challenge what the group calls "the misguided cuts to funding for physician services".

Wearing labcoats, scrubs and stethoscopes, and carrying signs and banners, doctors spoke of their genuine worry that the Liberal unilateral actions were jeopardizing patient services across Ontario.

“Physicians do not exist in isolation. The inevitable result of slashing 1 billion dollars from physician services is causing staff unemployment, reduced services, lack of access, doctor shortages, crowded emergency departments and hospital beds,” stated Dr. Nadia Alam, a GP-Anesthesiologist from Georgetown.

Dr. Kulvinder Gill, an Allergist and Pediatrician practicing in Brampton and Milton, described a healthcare system in crisis where the most vulnerable in our society were now at the highest risk: “It scares me that seniors are parked in the ER corridors for days waiting for a hospital bed. This indignity and lack of respect for our seniors, who have spent a life-time contributing to our healthcare system as taxpayers, is unacceptable.”

Since its inception in September 2015, Concerned Ontario Doctors, a physician-led grassroots advocacy group of over 11,000 members, has been tracking, verifying and mapping out the growing impact of the Ontario Liberals' unilateral actions.

"It is clear that these cuts have forced physicians to adopt ongoing cost-savings measures like staff lay-offs, service reductions and in worst-case scenarios, clinic closures. This inevitably leads to longer wait-times and less access to care for thousands of patients across Ontario.
