Pan Am Games sand coming to North Bay

Sand from the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will be coming to North Bay tonight.

Sand from the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will be coming to North Bay tonight.

This evening a large convoy of trucks will be delivering the sand from Toronto to store in our community for distribution to the beach volleyball courts at the Canor Molson Sand Centre, located in downtown North Bay.

Transportation will begin tonight with over 30 trucks coming north with the sand.  More sand will arrive over the next several days as various Pan Am sites are decommissioned.

According to Vision Volleyball, approximately 3000 tonnes of sand is expected in total.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our community to be able to make use of the best sand in the world," said Amedeo Bernardi, President of Vision Volleyball.

“Local and area athletes will be playing on the same sand that international athletes have played on during the Pan Am Games.  This generous legacy gift from TO2015 and Volleyball Canada underscores the national recognition North Bay has received thanks to hosting the NORCECA international beach volleyball tournament on Canada's only permanent international facility. This event features players from the Pan Am Games destined for the Olympics.  We encourage everyone to come and join us for NORCECA 2015 at the Canor Molson Sand Centre."

The courts will be hosting two major beach events in the next few weeks.  Elite adult athletes will be competing in the OVA Grand Slam on August 1st and 2nd.  The following weekend the second NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Conference) tournament will take place on August 7th to 9th.

Admission to the OVA Grand Slam is free with a donation to the North Bay Food Bank.
