Local dignitaries participated in an official ground-breaking ceremony for the Township of Bonfield’s outdoor rink project this afternoon.

The township is constructing a heated changeroom and Zamboni garage with $56,000 it received from the Government of Canada’s Community Infrastructure Program, which celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary as a nation.

Construction is expected to be completed in time for Canada Day. Degagne Carpentry is the general contractor for the project.

The covered outdoor rink offers public skating, pickup hockey games and ice rentals. It doubles as a skateboard park during the warmer months.

“I can’t think of any more Canadian a project than a change room for shinny hockey,” said Mayor Randy McLaren. “This will be an enduring testament to the 150th anniversary of Canada.”

“Local facilities such as Bonfield’s outdoor skating rink are an integral part of communities large and small across Canada,” said MP Anthony Rota. “This investment will ensure this important local asset will remain a focal point for many years to come.”
