The Almaguin Highlands OPP for the month of February will be performing a dedicated focused patrol of the Almaguin Highlands area for motorized snow vehicle (MSV) violations.

Officers will be enforcing the Trespass to Property Act for drivers using private property or sidewalks when travelling.  Officers have issued three Provincial offence notices for snowmobile violations this past weekend.

All operators of MSV’S are required to know the law pertaining to snowmobiles.

You CAN ride:
• On your own property
• On private trails belonging to organizations of which you are a member
• On private property, with the owner's permission
• Alongside public roads, between the shoulder and fence line (unless prohibited by the municipality)

You CAN'T ride:
• On certain high-speed roads
• On the pavement of public roads where vehicles drive
• On the ploughed portion of the shoulder
• On sidewalks
Always check with your local municipality regarding their by-laws.

The OPP would also like to remind MSV operators to check your vehicle prior to taking trips to make sure it is in proper running condition.  Always carry an emergency kit, flashlight, cell phone and non-perishable food items.  Let someone know where you are travelling and when you plan on returning.  Always check ice conditions before heading out on the lakes, rivers and waterways.
