Espanola – On the 05 Oct 2012 the Sagamok detachment of the Anishnawbek Police Service and Espanola O.P.P. received a report of two people out in a boat on the North Shore of Lake Huron adjacent to the Sagamok First Nation.

As a result of the bad weather out on the water, the two people in the boat were thrown into the water.

Only one person was able to swim to shore and reported the incident to authorities. A search for the second person began immediately with the use of (J.R.C.C.) Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre, The Canadian Coast Guard, O.P.P. (S.A.V.E) Unit (Snowmobile, A.T.V. and Vessel Enforcement.

On the 06 Oct 2012, at approx.1830 hrs. the O.P.P. Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located the second male deceased.

The deceased is Martin Nashkawa of Sagamok First Nation ( 34 yrs of age).

No foul play is suspected in this matter.

The investigation continues in conjunction with the coroner’s office.

The O.P.P. would like to remind the public the need to wear approved floatation devices while boating.
