Police will tell you that knowledge of the lake and ice is important if you intend to drive a car on it.

So apparently is sobriety.

Sunday morning North Bay OPP officers responded to a complaint of a vehicle stuck on Lake Nipissing in the Township of Nipissing.

"When officers arrived at the scene they found a male asleep in the driver's seat, the vehicle was in reverse and the engine was revving," said  Acting Sergeant Shona Camirand "Officers quickly woke up the driver and requested he provide a breath sample. Roadside tests were conducted, and, consequently, the driver was arrested for impaired driving."

More tests were completed at OPP headquarters and, as a result, Paul Joseph Chalupka, 43, of Stoney Creek, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration - 80 Plus and
  • Drive Motor Vehicle, No Currently Validated Permit

Chalupka was issued a 90-day Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on March 5.
