Ontario's sunshine list is out

In keeping with the government's commitment to accountability and transparency, the salaries and taxable benefits of Ontario Public Service (OPS) and broader public sector (BPS) employees who were paid $100,000 or more in 2011 were released today.

This is the third consecutive year that the average salary on the list has declined. For 2011, the average salary over $100,000 across the OPS decreased by $1,211 (one per cent) from $128,850 to $127,639, and by $86 across the BPS from $127,735 to $127,649.

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure is published annually and includes organizations that receive transfer payments from the province of at least $1 million or 10 per cent of their gross revenues, provided the transfer amount was $120,000 or more.

QUICK FACTS

The threshold of $100,000 has not changed since the PSSD Act was introduced in 1996. If the threshold had kept up with inflation, it would now be about $139,000.

If this threshold was in place, the current list would be approximately 78% shorter.

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act applies to the provincial government, Crown agencies and corporations; Ontario Power Generation, Hydro One and their subsidiaries; and publicly funded organizations such as hospitals, municipalities, school boards, universities and colleges.

The province also posts, on a separate website, the expense information for Cabinet Ministers, political staff, OPS senior management, appointees and senior executives at Ontario's 22 largest agencies
The government is proposing to lead by example by extending the current freeze on MPP salaries for an additional two years.

MPP salaries have already been frozen for three years.

The McGuinty government is on track to reduce the size of the OPS by five per cent by March 2012 and has committed to a further reduction of 1,500 full-time staff by March 2014.

These measures will save almost $500 million a year once fully implemented.
