Ontario doc tweets hard data on COVID-19 cases, outcomes, and their correlation to vaccination status

Dr. Kwan's COVID-19 data for June 12–July 10 in Ontario shows 95.7 per cent of cases, 97.4 per cent of hospitalizations, 99.5 per cent of ICU admissions, and 95.8 per cent of deaths occurred in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals

In an attempt to reach underserved segments of the population yet to be vaccinated, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is scaling back on its mass COVID-19 vaccination clinics while adding walk-in opportunities, and planning more pop-up clinics.

Just as interest has reached a plateau locally, come the findings of a southern Ontario doctor who is using her wide reach on social media to highlight provincial public health data related to the vaccine.

Dr. Jennifer Kwan, a family physician based in Burlington, Ont., is releasing her calculations to the masses regarding recent (June 12–July 10) COVID-19 cases in Ontario, their outcomes, and the correlation of those outcomes to vaccination status.

From data gleaned from Public Health Ontario epidemiological reports, Kwan's research shows during that June 12 to July 10 timeframe, 95.7 per cent of cases, 97.4 per cent of hospitalizations, 99.5 per cent of ICU admissions, and 95.8 per cent of deaths occurred in unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals.

Kwan has been regularly posting graphs and data visualizations to social media during the COVID-19 pandemic to help the public and other medical professionals interpret the epidemiology of the virus in Ontario.

With over 71,000 Twitter followers, Kwan has a wide social media reach. She is a graduate of the McMaster Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and trained in the McMaster Family Medicine Residency program in 2017 as one of the Chief Residents.

Between June 12 and July 10, of 265 fatalities in individuals with confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, Dr. Kwan's calculations show 225 or 84.9 percent were unvaccinated, 29 or 10.9 per cent were partially vaccinated, 11 or 4.2 per cent were fully vaccinated. Of the 11 deaths in the fully vaccinated cases, one was age 60–69 and 10 were age 80 and over.

Over the same timeframe, there were 211 COVID-19 ICU admissions to Ontario hospitals. Of those, 177 or 83.9 per cent were unvaccinated, 33 or 15.6 per cent were partially vaccinated, and one or 0.5 per cent was fully vaccinated. The one fully vaccinated ICU admission was age 80 and over.

Of 758 hospitalizations for confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, according to Public Health Ontario, 570  or 75.2 per cent were unvaccinated, 168 or 22.2 per cent were partially vaccinated, and 20 or 2.6 per cent were fully vaccinated.

A breakdown by age group of the 20 fully vaccinated individuals hospitalized:

  • Age 30-39: 2
  • Age 40-49: 2
  • Age 50-59: 1
  • Age 70-79: 7
  • Age 80+: 8

Of the 6,129 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario between June 12 and July 10, 3,491 or 57.0 per cent were unvaccinated, 456 or 7.4 per cent were not yet protected (within 14 days of receiving their first shot), 1,920 or 31.3 per cent were partially vaccinated, and 262 or 4.3 per cent were fully vaccinated.

Of those 262 cases in fully vaccinated individuals, 167 were symptomatic and 95 were asymptomatic.
