One turf field opens another project one starting

A pair of turf sports field projects are taking place in the city of North Bay

A pair of turf sports field projects are taking place in the city of North Bay.

Up at Nipissing University, workers are doing the finishing touches on the Nipissing University turf field; a $2.1 million dollar project that the school announced last June.

The field measures 64m x 100m and is designed in accordance with FIFA standards. It features lighting and perimeter fencing.

Youth soccer teams are already using the new facility while work on the bleachers, a press box, and a new scoreboard continues.

That work is expected to be complete by August.

The area surrounding the fenced-in field is also being leveled and cleaned up to create space for players to warm up and fans to spread out.

The university is planning an official grand opening for the turf field in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend, September 21-23. The facility will be used for the Lakers soccer and lacrosse teams.

While the final touches are being done on the Nipissing University field, the city of North Bay is just starting with its renovations at Veteran’s baseball field.

The City Parks and Recreation Department has been working alongside North Bay Minor Baseball and the Men’s Senior Baseball league over the past year to re-develop the well-used field.

Council approved the project in March.  It's expected the renovations will cost more than $500,000 to complete, with some financial support from both minor and senior baseball leagues as well.

The Veteran’s Field facelift involves the design and reconstruction of the Veterans Sports Complex and including:

    •    upgrade the existing skinned surfaced infield to a synthetic grass surface

    •    reconstruct the grass outfield, upgrade the current drainage & irrigation systems

    •    install a new pitcher’s mound and home plate

    •    replace and redesign the outfield fence to improve field dimensions and install a warning track

On Monday, the field was closed for the remainder of the baseball season with the repairs expected to be complete by this September.
